Sclerotherapy is a popular and highly effective method of removing unwanted superficial telangietasias, or spider veins. A medication, called a sclerosing agent, is injected into the vein causing the wall of the vein to break down.
Is it Safe?
As with all procedures there are some risks involved in the treatment of spider veins, but serious adverse reactions are rare. The most common side effects from sclerotherapy treatment include:
- Itching of the vein route post treatment that may last 1 – 2 days
- Transient hyperpigmentation, or light brown discolouration of the skin. Almost all patients will experience this immediately after the treatment, in rare cases darkening may persist for 4 – 12 months
- Mild to moderate discomfort and bruising around the injection site and tenderness of the vein. Pain usually does not persist for longer than 7 days post treatment
How many treatment will I require?
The number of treatments required to improve the appearance of unwanted spider veins varies from patient to patient. The average number of treatments is 1 – 6, with most only requiring 3 or 4. For individual vein treatment 1 – 3 treatments should be expected.
What kind of results can I expect?
The majority of patients who have sclerotherapy treatment will see a significant improvement in the appearance of their spider veins. Our injecting doctor will perform a full examination and assessment prior to treatment and give you realistic treatment expectations.
Will it hurt?
The injections that are used in the procedure are tiny and usually pain-free. The medication that is injected into the vein may sting a little. You may feel tenderness after the treatment at the injection sites and along the route of the vein for 1 – 7 days post treatment.
Are there side effects?
There are very few side effects associated with sclerotherapy, it is a very safe treatment. Your treating doctor will discuss this with you in detail at your initial consultation.
Who can not have sclerotherapy treatment?
Women who are pregnant or breast feeding cannot have sclerotherapy treatment. Please also discuss with your doctor if you have a history of blood clots.
How long do results last?
Most patients achieve permanent results with sclerotherapy treatment. Depending on the underlying cause of the spider veins, new veins may arise over time that will require further treatment. Some patients may require ongoing treatment to maintain the reoccurring spider veins (1 – 2 treatments per year).
After your treatment you will be required to wear compression stockings for at least 2 weeks. These stocking assist with reducing risk of swelling, bruising and discomfort. The stockings may be removed and washed at night, but need to be worn throughout the day.
