How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Undesirable hair growth is frustrating, to say the least, and people go through a variety of quick-fix treatments at home to avoid it. The most common forms of hair removal are down to shaving, waxing and plucking as well as chemical degradation of the hairs. Depending on the nature of your hair follicles, the amount of hair you have and in what region it’s located, you could be doing more damage to the skin than you need to be. Much of the time, people are embarrassed to go to a doctor or cosmetic spa and look into hair removal because someone might see them. No matter how well you think you’re working away at your hair issue, these at home methods are painful and will never truly work to rid you of this excess hair. We have a solution for you to help you ease the hair stress.

We want our patients to feel as comfortable as possible when they step into our Melbourne-based Main Street Cosmetic & Skin because we understand the struggle. Every treatment you have at Main Street is customised to your particular needs and we will sit with you to discuss each one. When our patients come to our cosmetic doctors with their facial and body hair difficulties, we offer them custom treatments that will work to target the hair and soothe the skin so you look naturally beautiful afterward. So put down the wax and disarm yourself with those tweezers, because we have a treatment that will get rid of the hairs comfortably. Laser hair removal can help our patients ease their worries and fears over unwanted hair treatments when there’s a comfortable way to remove the hairs for good.

Laser hair removal is the process of significantly reducing hair growth using heat energy. The laser works by using a light source to target and selectively heat the hair follicle, destroying the stem cells and preventing its future growth. Other hair removal treatments remove these hair follicles temporarily but will never get to the core of hair growth like laser hair removal will.

The laser is highly attracted to the melanin or pigment in the hair. Hair has a larger amount of melanin than skin, so it attracts the laser energy more readily than skin. Therefore, as a rule, people with dark hair and light skin are easiest to treat. Laser hair removal works best on the hairs that are in their active growth phase. The active growth phase is every four to six weeks for the face and six to eight weeks for the body.

In our Main Street Cosmetic & Skin, we use the MPX Elite with the wavelengths 755nm and 1064nm. The 755nm wavelength is more highly attracted to pigment and is more suited to hair reduction on fairer skin types. The 1064nm wavelength is more suited for use on olive and darker skin types as it has a lesser degree of attraction to pigment, therefore giving a safer treatment to darker skin types.

For those who have very fine, dark, fluffy hair, especially to the face and neck, it is also an option to use the Medlite laser for treatment. The Medlite, rather than removing the hair completely, simply bleaches the hair, so it is not as visible. Your skin care professional at Main Street will help you analyse your skin and choose the best hair therapy for your skin and hair type.

What are the risks of Laser Hair Removal?

There are risks involved will all laser treatments. However, our experienced staff will provide the safest treatment possible by thoroughly assessing your skin and taking a comprehensive medical history. Should the current condition of your skin require special treatment to ensure your health and safety before any laser hair removal treatment, our skin care team will create a plan for you.

Is Laser Hair Removal painful?

The laser head is placed on the skin and systematically fired over the areas to be treated, overlapping by 10% to decrease the chance of missed areas. Laser hair removal should not be painful; most people describe it as a mild prickling or pinching sensation. We also blow cool air on the skin while treating to reduce heat and discomfort. Again, we only choose the most comfortable treatments for our patients and laser hair removal is quite painless.

Will Laser Hair Removal work for blonde, grey, red or white hairs?

Laser only works on hairs that have pigment in them. Therefore, patients with red, grey or white hairs may be harder to treat, or untreatable.

Will I see the effects immediately after treatment?

The hair in the treated area generally takes one to three weeks to fall out. Most people will see results after the first treatment and their hair will grow back slower and finer.

How many treatments will I need?

Exactly how many treatments each will need is difficult to predict. If you have no pre-existing medical conditions, that may affect your treatments. Roughly, six to 10 treatments are required for significant hair reduction. Once you have completed your course of treatments, maintenance treatments are required to maintain results. Usually, this requires two to four treatments per year (depending on the area).
